The Wellsboro Varsity baseball team got back in the win column last night as they beat rival Mansfield, 12-1. The win, Wellsboro's first in 3 games (1 yet to be finished), is their first win of the second half of NTL West play.

Senior Nick Callahan led Wellsboro at the plate going 3-3 with two runs scored while Thomas Johnston and Pat Parsons both went 2-3. Johnston added 2 RBIs and two runs while Parsons also had an RBI.

Junior Matt Reese went 1-2 with a run scored to chip in for the Hornets.

Junior Dan Saniga earned his second win of the season as he pitched a one-hit complete game.

"Dan has emerged as a reliable, go to pitcher for our staff," said head coach Philip Prough. "He has improved his control and in doing so has become a difficult pitcher to face. He is understanding that he has the ability to challenge hitters at different points in the count and in the game."

The Hornets opened up the game in the 3rd inning when they sent 10 batters to the plate scoring 5 runs. From there, Mansfield's pitching struggled to find the zone. By the time the 5th inning came, Mansfield's sole run was unearned and with Saniga in command, the game was comfortably in the hands of the Hornets.

With the win, the Hornets improve their 2012 record to 7-4 (5-1 NTL West). The team will be back in action on Monday, May 7, as they host Cowanesque.
