Hornet baseball falls to Canton, 7-2.

The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team dropped their season opener to Canton, 7-2 on Friday, April 3.

The Hornets held a 2-1 lead after the first inning as Juniors Dawson Prough and Nick Webster each scored runs after drawing walks to reach base. The Hornets would hold that lead thanks to Junior Joe Allen and tremendous defense until the seventh inning.

Wellsboro had two outs with Canton's John Bowman on third base when the Hornets gave up a pass ball allowing Bowman to score the tying run to push it to extra innings. Canton then went on the score five runs in the eighth inning to pick up the victory.

Junior Nick Tremper went 1-for-4 at the plate and had the only hit for the Hornets on the afternoon. Allen started on the mound and went five solid innings, giving up only one run on three hits. Junior James Mundy came on in relief for 2 and 1/3 innings, giving up six runs on four hits. Senior Brett Kendrick also pitched 2/3 of an inning.

With the loss, the Hornets start the 2015 season 0-1 (0-0 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action on Monday, April 6 as they travel for a rematch of Friday's game.
