Hornet baseball opens season with 6-1 win over NEB.

After waiting a week to start the 2017 season, the Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team opened with a strong 6-1 win over Northeast Bradford on Monday, April 3.

The Hornets scored an early run by junior Dalton Prough on an RBI by junior Caleb Tennis, then added two more in third as Tennis and freshman Billy Lechler both scored to make it 3-0. Prough scored his second run in the fourth to push the score to 4-0. The Hornets' final two runs came in the seventh inning from sophomore Cam Tennis and junior Trent Darrow.

NEB's lone run came in the seventh inning.

Freshman Carson Davis was 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Hornets in his first Varsity start, Caleb and Cam Tennis were both 2-for-4, and Prough, Lechler, sophomore Taynton Repard, and freshman Silas Wagaman all added hits. Junior Johnny Rowland started on the mound and picked up the win, striking out two in four innings of work. Davis pitched two innings and struck out five, and Prough threw an inning and struck out one.

"I'm pleased with our performance given the fact it was the first time we were on a field," said head coach Philip Prough. "Rowland and Davis had good control. We hit well having 11 hits from 7 different players, but left 12 on base. Carson was 3-for-3 and gave us a solid outing. Overall, it was a good win for our young team."

The Hornets (1-0, 1-0 NTL) will be back in action on Wednesday, April 5 at Canton.
