Hornets edged out by Danville, 5-4.

The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team came up short in a 5-4 loss to Danville to have their 9-game win streak snapped on Tuesday, May 15.

The Hornets fell behind early as Danville plated 4 of their 5 runs in the first two innings. Wellsboro managed to cut the lead in half in the top of the third as senior Parker Mann reached on an error then scored as senior Dalton Prough doubled. Prough later crossed home plate on an RBI single by junior Cam Tennis.

The Ironmen added their final run in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to 5-2. From that point on both teams struggled getting hits. Danville managed to record two base hits while the Hornets only registered one until the top of the seventh.

Sophomore Silas Wagaman led off the inning with a base hit followed by another reach by Mann. Wagaman would come around to score to cut the lead to 5-3 and senior Johnny Rowland hit into a fielder's choice but still brought home a run to cut it to 5-4, but this time the Hornets couldn't complete the late inning rally.

Sophomore Carson Davis was 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Wellsboro while Prough, Tennis, Wagaman, and freshman Kaeden Mann added the remaining hits. Rowland recorded his first loss of the year on the mound, giving up 5 runs on 6 hits with 5 strikeouts in 5 innings of work. Prough pitched the sixth inning and recorded a strikeout.

The loss drops the Hornets to 14-3 (13-1 NTL Large School Division). The team will be back in action three of the next four days. They travel to Wyalusing this afternoon for their final league game, host Shikellamy on Thursday, May 17, then travel to Milton on Saturday, May 19.
