2012 Towanda vs. Sayre BaseballSAYRE - The Towanda Black Knights got a dominant pitching performance from Mason Roof and overcame a shaky game in the field to defeat the Redskins, 11-8.

Roof worked six innings, striking out 13 and walking none while allowing four hits. He hit three batters and allowed five runs, just one of them earned as the Black Knights had five errors defensively.

"I said to the kids afterwards, it was an ugly win, but an ugly win is better than a loss," Towanda coach Bill Sexton said. "We have to get more consistent in all aspects of the game.

"It was a really fine pitching effort by Mason. Four hits over six innings, strikes out 13 and doesn't walk anyone. We should have won comfortably. When a team gets four hits, they shouldn't score eight runs. But, I give credit to our kids. We kept scoring runs the whole night. We got 14 hits and we needed to get 14 hits to win the game. We scored in six of the seven innings and we had a chance to score in all of them. We left the bases loaded in the second."

With the win the Black Knights stay unbeaten in NTL East play, while Sayre suffers their third league loss of the season.

Zack Ripic worked one inning in relief, striking out two, walking three and allowing three runs, one earned.

Towanda took a 2-0 lead in the first as Brandon Dinelli doubled to right center and scored on a Ripic single and with two outs Ripic scored on an Austin Markel double.

Towanda made it 3-0 in the third as Roof led off with a single and stole second. Noah Huff came in to run and after Markel walked, Huff scored on an error off the bat of Nick Place.

Towanda made it 4-0 in the fourth as Casey Huff walked and stole second and moved to third on a groundout. After Ripic walked and an out was record, Markel singled home Huff.

Sayre cut the deficit to 4-1 after four, but Towanda added to the lead in the fifth as Grady Robinson singled and a sacrifice bunt by Sawyer Strope moved his pinch runner Noah Huff to second. A groundout moved him to third and he scored on a double by Casey Huff, and Huff scored from second on an error.

Down 6-1, Sayre had a four-run fifth to get back into the game.

Nate Williams started things with a single to right and Nick Skerpon doubled home Williams. Alex Lyons was hit by a pitch and Jared Donovan hit a fly ball which went as an error on the left fielder, allowing Skerpon and Lyons to score. An attempted pickoff throw got away and then the throw back in resulted in an error, allowing Donovan to score.

Towanda got two more in the sixth as Casey Huff singled and stole second with one out. After a second out, Place walked, Robinson singled home Roof and Strope reached on an error that allowed Place to score.

Towanda made it 11-5 in the top of the seventh as Casey Huff led off with a single and Dinelli reached on an error. Ripic singled home Huff and Roof singled home Dinelli. Ripic scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Tristan James.

In the bottom of the seventh Sayre got three runs, but that's where the rally ended. Cody Ketter walked and Williams walked, before Skerpon walked to load the bases. After a strikeout, a wild pitch allowed Ketter to score and an infield error allowed Williams to score. Skerpon scored on a fielder's choice.
