2014 Wellsboro vs. Towanda BaseballWYSOX - Joe Allen was unhittable for five innings and the Wellsboro Green Hornets used dominant pitching to defeat Towanda 1-0 on Monday.

Allen and Brandon Owlett combined on a two hitter for the Green Hornets, striking out six Towanda batters.

"I have got to give all the credit to my defense," Allen said.

On a windy day the defense knew they had to be ready the whole game.

"We did a good job, trying to stay active and on our toes," Owlett said.

Allen held the Black Knights hitless through five innings and in the sixth with a 1-0 lead Owlett came in after Richard Benjamin and Ethan Barto got Towanda's only two hits.

After Owlett got Dylan Bates to ground into a fielder's choice, it left runners on the corner for Nick Place.

"That's what you want to see, their best against our best," Towanda coach Bill Sexton said. "We had our chance there with our two best hitters (Bates and Place) up."

While the strong winds could be tough at times on Monday, the Wellsboro pitchers also knew it could work to their advantage.

In 5 1/3 innings Allen struck out two, walked two and allowed two hits. While he wasn't striking everyone out, he was giving the defense a chance to help him.

"I was trying to keep the ball down and give my defense a chance," he said. "Again, I have to give my defense all the credit."

Owlett struck out four in 1 2/3 perfect innings.

For Towanda Tristan James struck out eight and allowed one walk, one hit batter, four hits and one earned run in five innings. Sawyer Strope pitched two perfect innings, striking out four.
