2014 Wyalusing vs. Elk Lake BaseballWYALUSING - The Rams opened their baseball season with a 3-2 win over Elk Lake on Thursday afternoon.

Wyalusing jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings and held on for the victory.

Cody Pickett and Devon Carr had strong outings on the mound, combining for nine strikeouts and three walks in the cold weather.

"I was pleased with the way the pitching performance was today," Wyalusing coach Dave Hitchcock said. "I was

surprised because it's not what they've done in the gym. For them it's really the second time they faced liver hitters this year. I was really pleased with their control.

"One of those walks was intentional, so to Devon's credit he came in relief and really didn't have any walks."

Kyle Tinna had an RBI double in the first inning and Pickett had a two-run single in the second to bring home the Wyalusing runs. Isaac Bennett, Alex Dake and Holdan Hitchcock scored Wyalusing's runs and Pickett, Tinna, Hitchcock and Collin Edsell had hits.

"For me, I see my team being a really young, inexperienced team," Hitchcock said. "Cody (Pickett) is a senior, Jordan Salsman is a senior, but really I have a lot of kids that are not that experienced. That's what you need with a younger team is to be able to get a lead early and hang on to it and just hope you can weather the storm.

"It's a lot easier to pitch with a 3-0 lead then it is with a 1-0 ballgame. I'm glad we came back in that second inning and put more runs on the board. For us that early lead was a big help."

Pickett struck out seven, walked two and allowed three hits and one earned run in four innings. Carr struck out two, walked one, allowed four hits and one unearned run in three innings.

Nick Dudock had an RBI single for Elk Lake and he struck out five, walked five and allowed three hits and three runs, two earned, in two innings as the starting pitcher.

Wyalusing hosts Canton today.

Coudersport 15, Mansfield 3, 5 innings

Coudersport scored eight runs in the first two innings and added seven in the fifth for the win.

Ryan Whitmire had a double, and two RBI for Mansfield and Jarrod Burd had a hit and scored a run, while Brady Andrews had a hit.

J.P. Shaw and Bryce Zaparzynski scored runs for the Tigers.

Shaw started and struck out one in 1 2/3 innings and Burd struck out one in 2 1/3 innings, while Carl Dinger pitched the final inning.

Mansfield hosts Northern Potter on Monday.
