Athens edges Waverly; Canton edges Wellsboro in extra innings.

2015 Athens vs. Waverly BaseballATHENS - The Wildcats improved to 2-0 on the season as they defeated their cross-town rivals Waverly 4-2 in non-league baseball action Friday.

Athens broke open the scoring in the third with three runs, then made it 4-0 with a run in the fourth.

The Wolverines got on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh with two runs but couldn't get any closer.

Zane Vargason was 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI for the Wildcats while Sam Perri went 2-for-2 as well.

Daniel Joyce added a double with an RBI while Tyler Forbes and Ben Rubert also had hits.

Luke Newman added an RBI.

On the mound Matt Collins started and earned the win, going 5 1/3-innings with seven strikeouts, one hit and one walk.

Forbes finished up the final 1 2/3-innings with five strikeouts, one hit, two walks and two earned runs.

For Waverly Brendyn Stillman had a double while Zach Gingerich also had a hit. D.M. Meyers and Nate Bennett scored the two runs off the bat of Gingerich.

Collin Traub started and went 3 2/3-innings with one strikeout, seven hits and three earned runs for the loss. Gingerich pitched 1 1/3-innings with one earned run and one walk.

Zac Saxon went the final inning.

Canton 7, Wellsboro 2, 8 innings

John Bowman was everywhere for Canton on Friday.

He got the win from the mound, went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored the tying run in the top of the seventh to send the game to extra innings.

The Hornets went up 2-1 after the first inning, a score that held until the top of the seventh. That's when Canton tied it as Bowman scored from third on a pass ball with two outs.

Then in the extra inning they exploded for five runs to get the win.

Tyler Cole was 3-for-4 with a run scored for the Warriors while Bryce Cole was 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI.

Mason Moore got the start for Canton, going 3 1/3-innings to strike out five while Bowman went the final 4 2/3-innings to get the win. He struck out 11.

Nick Tremper went 1-for-4 for Wellsboro's lone hit. Nick Webster and Dawson Prough each had two walks with a run scored.

Joe Allen started for Wellsboro and went five innings with two strikeouts.

James Mundy came on in relief and went the next 2 1/3-innings for two strikeouts and takes the loss.

Brett Kenderick went the final 2/3-innings with one strikeout.

These two teams will match-up again on Monday at Canton.
