Sayre's Rockwell named top boys' newcomerOne of the smaller players in the NTL, Sayre's Jordan Rockwell stood tall throughout his freshman year.

Rockwell was a key member of the Sayre soccer, basketball and baseball teams this year and his success has earned him The Daily & Sunday Review Male Newcomer of the Year award.

"I thought it was very good," Rockwell said of his freshman year. "There were many ups and downs. A lot of times our teams came through when we needed them."

Right from the start of the year things went well for Rockwell as he had a strong season on the soccer field for the Redskins.

"Once it started off to a good start I tried to keep it going and see how far we could go with it," Rockwell said.

When basketball season came along Rockwell wasn't sure exactly what to expect, but with some injuries Rockwell and some of the team's other younger players got plenty of experience right away.

"I wasn't expecting to get as much playing time as I did, but I'm glad I did," Rockwell said. "It helped me out for the future."

In baseball season Rockwell had his best moment of his freshman year.

"My favorite part of this freshman year was probably winning our first district game against Millville at home in front of all the fans there," Rockwell said.

Not only was Rockwell a part of that win, he was the man on the mound for the Redskins in their biggest game.

"I am glad coach (Jon) Pack gave me a chance to start a couple games in big situations," Rockwell said. "He worked hard throughout the year with me and that really helped."

In baseball season Rockwell emerged as the team's pitching ace and Rockwell was happy to be in that role.

"That was great, I was glad our coach gave me the chance and the confidence in me to actually go out there and see what I can do."

One thing that helped Rockwell this year was having a strong group of other freshmen that he grew up playing with and continued to have as teammates in the college level.

"It definitely did help, we played with each other throughout our careers in all levels," Rockwell said. "Having the confidence in each other to just go out there and play the way we know we can."

Rockwell thinks that the young Redskin athletes can grow together in the future.

"I expect great things out of us in the future," Rockwell said. "I think more people are going to step up, especially the younger kids and I think it's going to be great years to come.

"As long as everyone keeps working I think great things are going to happen."

The one key for Rockwell this year was coaches who believed in him.

"I am just glad our coaches in all three sports gave me the chance to go out there and show what I can do," Rockwell said. "I feel like I showed them what I can do and it's going to be a great couple of years."

Being named the top newcomer in the area is special for the Sayre freshman.

"It feels great just knowing that people around are impressed with what we can do," he said. "It feels great, it's a great feeling."
