Three runs in eighth give Athens 5-2 win over Canton.

2015 Athens vs. Canton BaseballCANTON - It took extra innings but Athens was able to hold on for a 5-2 win over Canton in eight innings during NTL baseball action Wednesday.

The Wildcats started strong with two runs in the top of the first but Canton came back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth.

Both teams had chances to score late but couldn't get runners home.

Then in the top of the eighth Zane Vargason led off with a double followed by back to back intentional walks to load the bases. Vargason then scored on an error off the bat of Cody Jennings to make it 3-2.

Three batters later Ben Rubert hit a 2-out single to score two runs and make it a 5-2 final.

Vargason was 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored while Matt Collins, Luke Newman and Rubert had the other Athens hits.

Tyler Forbes scored a run and had an RBI as well.

On the mound Sam Perri started and went 3 1/3-innings for the no decision. He struck out five while allowing two walks, two hits and two earned runs.

Marc Felt came on for two innings, striking out two while allowing two walks, one hit and no runs.

Jennings finished out and earned the win, striking out two while allowing one walk.

Tyler Cole went 2-for-4 to lead Canton while Trevor Route added a hit with a run scored.

Travis Butcher scored their other run while John Bowman had an RBI.

Brandon Landis started and went three innings for the no decision, striking out two while allowing two hits, one walk and one earned run.

Clayton Tymeson finished out and scored the loss, striking out two while allowing three hits, three walks and three runs, one of them earned.

Notre Dame 4, Lansing 4, suspended in the 9th

The Crusaders weren't able to get their game in on Wednesday before darkness.

Both teams got a run in the first with Notre Dame going up 4-1 in the top of the fourth. Lansing came right back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to push the game into extra innings.

Kyle Minchin leads the Crusaders at the plate so far, going 3-for-5 with a double while Matt LaBadie is 2-for-4. Cameron Reid also has a double.

Collin Mustico started and went four innings before he was relieved by Ben Cook, who went the next four innings. Parker May was on the mound in the ninth.
