2012 Towanda vs. Waverly BaseballWAVERLY, N.Y. - Zack Ripic hit a 3-run home run and Towanda opened their season with a win over Waverly 11-3 Thursday.

"It's always good to win the first game of the season," Black Knight coach Bill Sexton said. "There were more plusses than minuses."

Towanda scored all 11 runs in two big innings, seven in the third and four in the sixth.

In the third Grady Robinson and Sawyer Strope had back to back walks while Dylan Bates loaded the bases by reaching on an error. Casey Huff then hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Robinson, followed by Brandon Dinelli reaching on an error to score Strope, Ripic then hit his 3-run blast to make it a 5-0 Black Knight lead. Mason Roof singled and reached second on an error, followed by Austin Markel reaching on a walk. Nick Place doubled to bring in Roof, followed by Robinson garnering another walk to load the bases. A fielder's choice off Strope scored Markel.

In the sixth Towanda drew seven walks to help score their four runs. Waverly would score in the third, fourth and seventh.

Ripic was 2-for-3 on the day with four RBI and one run scored while Huff, Roof and Place had hits. Roof and Bates scored twice while Jared Lines, Strope, Robinson, Markel, Ripic, Dinelli and Huff all reached home. Strope, Robinson, Markel, Roof and Huff also had RBI.

Markel earned the win, going four innings to allow one walk, three hits and one earned run while striking out six. Dinelli then went one inning to strike out three while walking two and allowing one hit. Strope went an inning, striking out two while walking one with one hit and Ripic pitched the final inning, striking out three while allowing one hit and one earned run.

Dylan Perry went 4-for-4 to lead the Wolverines while Cody Marchese and Matt Lee also had hits. Ken Evans scored twice while Zack Saxon reached home once. Anthony Girolamo and Perry had the two RBI.

"Markel brought us through four strong inning for us," Sexton remarked. "He got into a little bit of trouble but worked out of it. Our other kids threw effectively. We only had five hits but we hit the ball fairly hard, we didn't have many strike-outs other than one inning. All in all not too bad but definitely room for improvement."

Towanda travels to Edison with a 1 p.m. start today.

Sayre 19, Northeast Bradford 1, 4 innings

LERAYASVILLE - The Redskins scored 11 runs in the fourth to secure their first NTL East win of the season Thursday.

After a scoreless first inning Sayre jumped out 6-0 in the second, then made it 8-0 after the top of the third. The Panthers got their lone run in the bottom half of the inning.

Nick Skerpon led Sayre, going 3-for-3 with a double, triple and three runs while Alex Lyons was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and one RBI.

Dave Mendola, Tyler Williams and Jared Donovan had two hits each while Cody Ketter, Joe Kozemko and Taylor Lake also had hits. Donovan, Tyler Williams and Kozemko scored three runs, Brad Felt scored twice while Ketter and Dave Mendola also scored. Nick Hall and Mendola also had RBI.

Beeman got the win, going three innings to strike out five while allowing one walk and four hits. Hall pitched the final inning.

Nate Gallagher went 2-for-2 for the Panthers while Brett Goodwin, James Zajac and Aaron Pifer also had hits. Goodwin scored the only Panther run.

Zajac got the start, going three innings to allow five hits, two walks and eight runs, one of which was earned, while striking out four. Bill Franklin came on in the fourth but didn't register an out. Goodwin took over, striking out one while allowing two walks, five hits and seven earned runs.

Northeast and Sayre will meet again, this time at Sayre on Monday.

Canton 12, Muncy 4

The Redskins used a six run fourth inning to down the Indians in baseball action Thursday.

Emmett Watson had a grand slam home run in the second while Josiah Bardo had a solo shot for Canton. Garrett Wesneski went 3-for-3 with a run scored while Wes Moore and Chase Pepper were both 2-for-3 with a double. Moore had 3-RBI and three runs while Pepper had 2-RBI and two runs.

Ben Pepper was 2-for-4 with a double and run scored while Derek Wilcox, Scott Rockwell, Ryan Ball and Tanner Machmer also had hits. Ball scored twice while Wilcox crossed home once. Machmer added an RBI.

Ben Pepper got the win, going five innings to allow six strike-outs, one walk and four runs. Rockwell came on in relief, going two innings with one walk and one strike-out.

Canton will travel to Towanda Monday.

Athens 5, Owego 1

The Wildcats won their season opener Thursday. They took an early lead with three runs in the first inning then closed it out with two in the sixth inning.

Justin Schlosser, Chris Pack, Craig Moore and Nick Bradley had one hit each with Pack's a double. Schlosser had 2-RBI in the game.

Troy Stivason got the start and the win, going two innings to strike out two while allowing one run on two hits. Adam McCauley threw the next three, striking out four while allowing two hits.

Moore finished out, earning two strike outs.

The Wildcats are at Wyalusing Monday.
