Towanda 11, Sayre 4

SAYRE — The Black Knights found their offense with a six run fifth inning to hand the Redskins their second straight league loss.

Before this week Sayre was undefeated in NTL games.

"I thought it was a good win for us," Towanda coach Bill Sexton said. "Sayre had been playing well up until they lost to Wellsboro."

Starting strong was key for Towanda.

"We jumped out early and got those runs in the first and second innings," explained Sexton.

Sayre rallied to knot it up at 3-all after the third but Towanda had a big inning late to pull away.

"When they came back on us we stuck on it," Sexton said. "In the big inning we had timely hits and there were a couple Sayre errors."

Earlier this year it was the big innings going against the Black Knights but they did the damage this time and without two starters.

"It was nice to have JV kids come off the bench, start tonight and play well," remarked Sexton. "They played good defense for us."

Lars Thomason had two hits, including a triple, with three RBI for Towanda while Ricky Smiley and Ryan Bartholomew had two hits each as well. Smiley added a run and an RBI.

Troy Pierce and Brett Crispell also had hits.

Tyler Bidlack, Pierce, Smiley and Crispell each knocked in a run.

Pierce started and went six innings for the win. He struck out two while allowing one walk, seven hits and four runs, three of them earned, to improve to 2-2 on the season.

"I was pleased with Troy Pierce tonight," said Sexton. "It was his second strong outing in a row."

Pierce was injured earlier in the season but now healthy he's won two straight games.

"He finally got himself into pitching shape," remarked Sexton. "His last start against Troy and tonight against Sayre have been real quality starts for us."

And Pierce did this with the back-up catcher Ryan Bartholomew behind the plate.

"(He) found out he was going to be our starting catcher tonight at 3 p.m. when we got on the bus," said Sexton. "He did a fine job catching the game for us."

Connor Hanafin had a home run for the Redskins while Nate Sweet and James Esposito both had doubles.

Jordan Rockwell and John Esposito each had two hits with Quinn Hanafin getting a hit. John Esposito scored while Jake Goodrich and Chris Ray each had an RBI.
