Hornets over power Towanda to improve to 4-1.

A big first inning lifted the Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team past Towanda 10-6 on Friday, April 13.

"It was a good road win for us tonight. Jumping out of the gate in the first inning with 5 runs on 3 hits and a sac fly," said head coach Philip Prough. "We've started slow in most games so to get it rolling offensively was good."

The Hornets started out with singles by seniors Dalton Prough and Caleb Tennis and sophomore Billy Lechler. Prough, senior Johnny Rowland (walk), Lechler, Caleb Tennis, and junior Cam Tennis all played runs in the first inning to give Wellsboro a 5-0 lead.

Both teams scored a run each in the second, but the Hornets increased their lead with two runs in the third. Cam Tennis led off with a single and moved over to third then later scored on an RBI single by senior Parker Mann. Repard scored an at bat later as freshman Kaeden Mann doubled making it 8-1.

The Black Knights scored three runs in the fifth to cut the score to 8-4 before Mann homered in the sixth. Later in the seventh Caleb Tennis scored the Hornets' final run after leading off the inning with a double and scored on an RBI single by junior Taynton Repard.

Rowland threw six innings to earn the win on the mound with 4 strikeouts and Prough finished out the game with two strikeouts.

At the plate, Prough was 1-for-5, Lecher was 3-for-4, Caleb Tennis was 2-for-4 and brother Cam was 2-for-3. Parker Mann was 1-for-3, Repard was 1-for-1, and Kaedan Mann rounded out the lineup going 2-for-3 with a home run and double.

"Johnny pitched another solid performance. Billy continues to be hot at the plate. But the impressive performance was from Kaedenn Mann," continued Prough. "Two for three with a double and homer. We believed he has a good swing and the coaches wanted to begin having him get more reps at the plate. So we DH'd him to do so. He came through big and we couldn't be happier for him. That's very promising for our team as the year progresses."

The Hornets (4-1, 4-1 NTL Large School Division) will be back in action on Monday, April 16 against Shikellamy.
