Hornets hand Rams 1st loss of season.

The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team handed Wyalusing their 1st loss of the season, edging them 4-2 on Monday, May 9.

"We played a complete game against a quality team," head coach Steve Adams said. "To give them and (Blake) Morningstar there first loss says something. We did a great job of manufacturing runs. Isaac pitched another gem and we played solid defense. It was a good team win."

In a classic pitchers duel, the game was scoreless until the 4th inning when the Hornets added 3 runs to take the lead. With one our senior Darryn Callahan drew a walk then stole a base to move himself into scoring position. Two at bats later senior Isaac Keane singled to score Callahan, then later scored on a triple by junior Conner Adams to make it 2-0. Adams scored one at bat later on a base hit from junior Blake Hamblin.

Wyalusing got a run back in the bottom half of the inning as Blake Morningstar doubled and later scored to make it 3-1. The Hornets held on to their lead heading into the 6th inning where they added one more run. Callahan lead off an struck out, but reached base on a dropped third strike, then advanced to 2nd when the catcher couldn't locate the ball. Callahan later advanced to 3rd on a grounder by junior Cameron Brought, then scored as Keane grounded out to push the lead to 4-1. Wyalusing's rally attempt in the bottom of the 7th produced a run by Clayton Carr after a lead-off strike out. The Rams had two runners on base following back-to-back base hits before the Hornets got two ground outs to end the game and hang on for the win.

The Hornets had just three hits on the afternoon, all coming in their 4th inning. Keane and Hamblin were both 1-for-3 and Adams was 1-for-2. Keane pitched 6 & 1/3 innings before hitting the 100 pitch count to earn the win, giving up 2 runs (both earned) on 10 hits with 4 strikeouts. Hamblin came on in relief for the final 2/3 innings, throwing just 5 pitches to pick up the save.

The win improves the Hornets' record to 11-4 (11-3 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action this afternoon at Williamson.
