Hornets Suffer 3-1 Loss To Hughesville.

Wellsboro took an early lead but ended up falling 3-1 to District IV Class 3A leading Hughesville on the road on Monday, May 6.

"Hughesville is a well coached team and they are 13-2 for a reason," head coach Kyle Smith said. "They do a lot of little things well and we just didn't capitalize on the few mistakes they made. At the end of the day, we are not far away. Our team continues to play the game the right way. With a little more attention to detail, we will eventually win games like the one we played today. Proud of the effort, but we are not looking for morale victories. Drayden McGee had a great start on the mound for us, unfortunately, we are still searching for some timely hits."

After a scoreless first inning the Hornets took the early advantage. Freshman Coen Tennis led off the inning with a base hit then later scored on a ground out by junior Lucas Cuneo. Hughesville quickly rallied in the bottom half of the inning, plating two runs to take a 2-1 lead over Wellsboro. That score held all the way until the 6th when the Spartans added an insurance run.

Wellsboro was held to 4 hits on the day. Senior Caden Smith led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4 while Tennis and sophomore Cameron Owlett added the other hits.

McGee started and threw the first five innings on the mound, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts. Sophomore Dylan Copp threw the final inning, giving up 1 run on 3 walks.

Wellsboro (5-10, 4-7 NTL Large School Division) hosts Canton this afternoon.
